Public Share Links/QR Codes for Folders

Public Share Links and QR codes make it easy to share documents with trades, partners, or collaborators who don’t need a Digs account. You can generate a public link or QR code for an entire folder. Anyone with the link can view the files inside that folder, without logging in.

It’s fast. It’s simple. It removes friction.

Important: Subfolders Are Not Included

When you create a public link or QR code for a folder, only the files in the root of that folder are shared. Subfolders inside that folder are not included in the public view.

If a folder contains:

Project Folder
β”œβ”€β”€ Warranty Manual.pdf
β”œβ”€β”€ Appliance Guide.pdf
└── Bids (subfolder)

Only the files at the top level will be visible. The β€œBids” subfolder and its contents will not be exposed.

Why We Made This Decision

This was an intentional design choice focused on security.

When gathering requirements, one of the biggest concerns we heard was accidental over-sharing. For example:

  • Sharing a contract folder that contains competitive bid information in subfolders

  • Publishing a folder for a trade that unintentionally exposes unrelated documents

  • Accidentally making internal data public

While these scenarios may be uncommon, the risk of sharing too much information outweighed the convenience of automatic subfolder inclusion.

By limiting public links to root-level files only, we reduce the chance of accidental exposure.

Common Practice for Sharing

If you need to share specific files publicly:

  • Create a clean folder with only the documents you want exposed

  • Place the files directly in that folder (not nested inside subfolders)

  • Generate the public link or QR code

This keeps your sharing intentional and controlled.

Have Feedback?

If including subfolders in public shares would be valuable for your workflow, we’d love to hear about it. Real-world use cases help us prioritize improvements. As always, your feedback influences what we build next.
