Replying to comments by email sometimes generates an error message

The most common cause of this is dues to the hidden use of email aliases. Depending on who set up your email (Commonly in a company setting) you may not even be aware you are using an alias.

Replying to comments by email when using an email alias

You can reply to a comment notification straight from your email instead of logging in. Normally this works smoothly: your reply gets matched to your account and posted as a comment.

If you're replying from an email alias rather than your primary account address, though, that match can fail and your reply won't post.

Why this happens

An email alias shares the same mailbox as the address it's tied to, so mail sent to either one lands in the same inbox. That's part of why this trips people up: it feels like one email address, but the system checks the exact sender address on the reply, not the mailbox it landed in. If the alias itself isn't recognized as linked to your account, the match fails.

Workaround

Reply using the email address associated with your account, or the address that was used on the original project invite. Aliases that aren't tied to an account this way aren't reliably matched yet.

Note

This is a known limitation with certain alias setups. If replies still aren't posting after trying the address above, reach out to support with the email address you're using and we'll take a look.
